How to Make Samosa – A Delicious Indian Snack

Samosa is a crispy, golden, deep-fried pastry filled with a spiced potato mixture. It’s one of the most popular snacks in India and is often enjoyed with tea or served at parties and gatherings. Making samosas at home is easy and satisfying with the right ingredients and a few simple steps.

Ingredients

For the dough:

2 cups all-purpose flour (maida)

4 tablespoons oil or ghee

1/2 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)

Salt to taste

Water as needed

For the filling:

3–4 boiled potatoes, mashed

1/2cup boiled green peas (optional)

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1 teaspoon ginger (grated)

2 green chilies, chopped

1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

1/2 teaspoon garam masala

1/2 teaspoon amchur (dry mango powder)

Salt to taste

2 tablespoons oil

Fresh coriander, chopped

Step-by-Step Preparation

1. Prepare the Dough

In a bowl, mix flour, carom seeds, salt, and oil. Rub the oil into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Gradually add water and knead into a firm dough. Cover and let it rest for 20–30 minutes.

2. Make the Filling

Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for a minute. Add mashed potatoes, green peas, turmeric, garam masala, amchur, and salt. Mix well. Cook for 3–4 minutes, then let it cool. Add chopped coriander.

3. Shape the Samosas

Divide the dough into small balls. Roll each into an oval shape and cut it in half. Take one half, shape it into a cone, and seal the edge with water. Fill with 1–2 teaspoons of potato filling. Seal the open edge to form a triangle.

4. Fry the Samosas

Heat oil in a deep pan on medium heat. Fry samosas in batches until they turn golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
